Making Mussaf Meaningful – Understanding the Avodat Yom HaKippurim

Shiur Recap: “Making Mussaf Meaningful – Understanding the Avodat Yom HaKippurim”

Rav Yehuda Turetsky

A shiur was given on Yom Kippur night on the Kohain Gadol’s Avodah on Yom Kippur. Many of the Talmidim requested electronic copies of the source sheets. They have been uploaded here.

For those that were unable to attend and want a brief summary, the shiur consisted of three separate parts:

  1. We discussed why the Avodah is recited during Mussaf, as well as its precise role in Davening.
  2. We presented a brief introduction and overview of the Avodah. We offered a summary of the different forms of Avodah performed on Yom Kippur, as well as the unique role and special status of the Kohain Gadol and his clothing.
  3. The primary part of the shiur focused on individual Avodot performed on Yom Kippur that are not found throughout the rest of the year. We tried to combine some "lomdus" with "machshava" ideas in an attempt to develop a greater appreciation and understanding of the Avodah.
